Old Albums!!!

So, this weekend I was at this record store in Santa Barbara going through mountains of crude and dusty vinyl. Some old guy died in some central coast city and had an insane record collection. The crazy eccentric owner of this record store said "I was waiting for this fucker to die for like 4 years and he finally did". I guess he was some sick dude who had like anal cancer or some other horrible disease that takes a while to kill you. Anyways, this record store owner went into a 30 minute story about how he had bought these records from this guys family before he was even dead and started rambling on about how he spent 5000 bucks and had to haul all these records from like 3 hours away and make two trips. During this drunken lunatic's story, I couldn't help thinking about the poor S.O.B that fucking owned these gems before. I'm sure he spent countless hours at thrift stores, swap meets, record stores, and estate sales to get these to only have someone buy them before he was even dead..... At least he got to listen to them til he died... I'm sure he at least had some comfort in that. My point, is that if I die fuck the records.... You can sell off everything I own but my records won't go for $$$$. Those go to all the friends that I've spent time going to shows, jabbing bout tunes, and making music with.

As for the music reviews this week, I'd like to focus on Old albums. Pre - 1980's. Obviously, there are a shitton of records from 1980 onward that are worth talking about but all the ones i bought this weekend were old....

1. Eric Burdon and the Animals - Wind of Change

God damnnnn. I'm not sure of anything in this world except that we all will die but if reincarnation isn't just some bullshit then I'd really like to know wha t my soul was doing in 1968. If I was living in any western civilization, I probably owned and was rocking out to this album. First off, It has that track "San Franciscan Nights" which is the most fitting song to an awesome city. Burdon starts the track off spitting to all residents of Europe by telling them to sell everything they own and move to San Francisco so they will understand what this song is all about. Fucking brillant. Another awesome track is "Good Times"..... with lyrics like "If I think of all the good times I have spent having good Times" you know an real party animal will be feeling this shit. Paint it Black cover. Also, this album has two semi-spoken word tracks. I hate spoken word.... but these Animal backed poems are amazing if you've just smoked a bunch of weed. One of them is about the black plague... Need I say more.


2. Rhinocerous - Rhinocerous

I aint gonna lie but I really didn't know much about this band until I starting looking it up. I had wound up in the web which is allmusic.com and stumbled across it while checking out the work of former Mothers of Invention drummer, Bill Mundi. I didn't really hunt it down or anything but I saw it for like 8 bucks so gave it a shot. Besides having an awesome Psychedelic Rhino album cover this album doesn't really have much to offer. It does however have a couple of good tracks like "When you say your sorry" and "You're my girl(I don't want to discuss it)" There are a couple of good guitar solos spread throughout, courteosy of Danny Weis who used to play with Iron Butterly. This album needed to be more Butterfly and not so slow.... I basically passed out in my closet listening to this.

3. Jimi Hendrix - Last Night

Everytime I see a different Hendrix album I'm always like holy shit. "How the fuck did he record this much"? I mean he basically recorded for like 7 or 8 years and only solo as most know him for 4. But there are like 5000 records. Most of these are bootlegs and are recorded concerts but still. Last night came out on the German record label Astan. Astan was run by Ed Chaplin who had somehow signed Hendrix for some taped sessions in London that would later cause a legal battle. I own this one and "Second Time Around" which has the track Got to have it which was sampled by the Beastie Boys. That record is a way better than this one all-in-all. Last night is mostly made up of covers but they are pretty sweet covers at that. Money, Hang on Sloopy, and Walk the dog all sound like they were recorded at a band practice or something but this is still a must have for all real Hendrix fiends.

Coachsmella....

So, I'm back from muthafunking Coachsmella. Great bands like always but still I think that the lineup for 2006 was somewhat lackluster. I mean WOW Madonna!!! 40,000 people watching her in some small sweaty tent aint my thang. I mean isn't she like 50 and making disco now. What the fuck. She killed Disco!!! But the Nazis at Goldenvoice did have Daft Punk. Daft Punk killed it harder than Danny Devito in "Throw Mama From a Train". Speaking of DD, he was there introducing Eagles of Death Metal. Other highlights were Massive Attack, TV on the Radio, and Jamie Lidell.

2006 was all about the Babies. I guess you can bring your kids in for free but who the hell would want to. It's like this chode is trying to tell the other chodes that he's a cool Dad!!!! A cool dad isn't about taking your kids to a concert when he's fucking zero. Fucking parents.... letting their kids bake in the blistering sun and listening to Tool so they can rupture their little ear drums. Whatever.... I guess it just fucks with my buzz.

Good times though.

Anyways, while i'm at it. This is the first real post for this blog. And it aint really about posting shit about my weekend. It's about music and my opinion of it. I guess it's also a crappy way for me to express my semi-literate ass.

This week I will be reviewing three albums that came out recently.

Spank Rock - YoyoYoYoyoYo.... - The newest offering from the Ninja Tune subsidiary, the Big Dada label, brings together all that is sweet about partying. MC Spank Rock, a.k.a Naeem Juman, and one time DFA apprentice, Alex "Armani XXXchange" Epton, create a combination as perfect as Rum and Coke. Some of these 12" have come out in recent months, with remixes from the likes of Diplo, Kalbata, President Evil and XXXchange himself. This album is like eating a middle american smorgasbord of food...'cept the food is musical genres. Booty Bass, B-more, Funk, and Electro all here. Plus, the last track is more screwed up then Paris Hilton, American Idol, and the Olsen Twins combined. 9.0

Wizardzz - Hidden City of Taurmond - This shit sounds like Brian Eno on speed playing Nintendo. Still somewhat brillant like putting your finger in a light socket and liking it. I guess this is a side project of one of the guys in Lightning Bolt. I was never really into Lightning Bolt cause I stopped doing Ritalin when I was 16 but......... this shit is unique. Nothing like Lightning Bolt but does have avant-garde written all over it. Good music to put on if your driving cross-country on the surface of Mars or just California. 7.4


Witch - Witch - Hailing from Tee Pee records this offering to the gods of Stoner Rock comes off a bit soft. Witch definitely has moments but Dinosaur Jr's, J Mascis, gets a sloppy wet on the drums. I will say that half of the album is brillant though and the tracks Black Saint, Changing, Rip Van Winkle(stupid name), and Isadora do show that this band is capable of getting stoner with it. Good album if your smoking copious amounts, sorta like my crue did at Coachella. 6.7
